The Department of Health's early years high-impact areas include accident prevention and reducing hospital admissions as public health priorities. Unintentional injuries are a serious cause of death and disability in children under 5 years old, and vulnerable families may be at greater risk as there is a link between deprivation and unintentional injury. Health visitors are well-placed to support all parents in reducing risks and preventing accidents and injuries in the home. In addition to working directly with families, health visitors can take a lead in local policy and community initiatives to raise awareness of accidental injuries and risk factors, ultimately improving outcomes for children and families.
