Pregnancy and childbirth is a special period in a woman's life
and involves significant physical, hormonal, psychological,
social and cultural changes. Maintaining health and wellbeing
during this time is imperative for both mother and child.
Holistic care for new mothers includes all aspects of health,
and sexual health is an important part of this. The antenatal
contact is an ideal opportunity for health visitors to discuss
contraception options, particularly if the client is seen on her
own. This article will discuss the role of the health visitor in
providing evidence-based information on contraception and
sexual health to women in the postnatal period.
