Health visitors work with families to promote the good health and development of children under 5 years of age. They enjoy unusual access to the home environment and have a key role in supporting vulnerable families on their caseloads, where issues such as domestic abuse, substance misuse and mental ill health can lead carers to, intentionally or unintentionally, harm or neglect their children. Research suggests that health visitors need to be better prepared with skills to 'read' and respond to the complex emotional dynamics within families. By introducing a simulation-based learning event using trained actors as simulated clients, student health visitors are offered the opportunity to rehearse working with a complex family in an immersive home environment. Student evaluation suggests the simulated event is a valuable learning experience.
