This article considers parental substance misuse and its impact on child development. Theories of normal child development provide a benchmark to explore the literature on potential outcomes for the developing child where parental substance misuse is a significant factor. The refocused role of the health visitor in Scotland highlights the need to improve outcomes for children at risk through early intervention.
