At the beginning of July 2017, NHS Digital published new statistics on
female genital mutilation (FGM) in the UK. They show that, during
2016-17, there were 5391 newly recorded cases reported in England,
114 of whom were girls under the age of 16 and 112 involved women
and girls who were born in the UK. The figures are down slightly from 2016, when
9223 attendances were reported in total, of which 6080 were newly recorded (NHS
Digital, 2017).
