In 2016, the World Health Organization commissioned
21 relevant systematic reviews to inform a global update of
the Baby Friendly initiative Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding.
This article summarises three of the reviews: Support for healthy
breastfeeding mothers with healthy term babies (McFadden et al,
2017); Interventions for encouraging women to start breastfeeding
(Balogun et al, 2016); and Education and training of healthcare
staff in the knowledge, attitudes and skills needed to work effectively
with breastfeeding women (Gavine et al, 2017). The article will go
on to examine the implications for practice globally.
