Whooping cough is a bacterial infection that babies are
routinely protected against via the national immunisation
programme. However, where a baby is too young to have
immunisations, or where parents have declined immunisations,
whooping cough can be life threatening particularly if
contracted under the age of 6 months (National Institute for
Health and Care Excellence, 2017a).
